Soils, Excavation and Below Grade Assemblies

Comfortable, problem free homes are built on solid foundations. This seminar explores the key considerations for below grade assemblies including soils, excavation, footings, foundation walls, insulation, damp/water-proofing, and airtightness. Upcoming BC Code changes to energy requirements and soil gas provisions for homes will have a significant impact on below grade assemblies.

This session discusses:

  • Various soil types found throughout the province
  • The importance of a solid foundation
  • Tips on working with professional geotechnical engineers where recommended or required
  • Key elements in excavating a site
  • Moisture movement challenges including rising damp, hydrostatic pressure, and run-off
  • Requirements for proper footing and storm drains
  • Structural performance of foundation components, and
  • Recent changes in the BC Building Code affecting insulation, soil gas provisions and airtightness.
