Now in their 13th year, the annual awards honour the best in new-home construction, renovation, and design projects. Custom-built homes, whole-home renovations, production homes and outdoor spaces, and state-of-the-art smart kitchens are among the 61 categories. A peer-reviewed panel of builders, renovators, and designers from across the country select the finalists from Metro Vancouver’s homebuilding industry. This year, 86 builders and designers are up for 233 finalist nominations.
Forge received most of its nominations for Fantom. The White Rock development encompasses A Vision at Fantom, which offers panoramic ocean views, outdoor patios, porthole windows, and The Wraith at Fantom. The latter is the development’s penthouse residence, and features matte black millwork adorned by Nero black marble and 14’ high south-facing windows. Over 4,500 square feet of building amenities include a residents’ lounge, theatre and bar, and health and fitness wing.
“We’re incredibly honoured and thrilled to receive 14 nominations this year,” said Cory and Sandy Saran, principals of Forge, via email. “Fantom has been an incredible journey for our team, and we’re humbled by the amount of positive support it’s received.”
Fantom’s nominations include the categories Best Multi-Family Condominium Unit: 800 S.F. and Over, Best New Kitchen: Multi-Family Production Home, Best Multi-Family Amenity Space, and Best Outdoor Living Space: Single-Family Production or Multi-Family Home, among others. Forge is also nominated for a Grand HAVAN, for Multi-Family Home Builder of the Year.
“FANTOM was designed as a natural extension of our award-winning Royce community,” the Sarans added. “We’re incredibly proud of our local design and construction teams, our trades and suppliers who worked tirelessly through the pandemic to bring this White Rock landmark to life!”
Other multiple nominees include Kalu Interiors Inc. (Vancouver), Vesta Properties Ltd. (Langley), Essence Properties (Surrey). Each received eight nominations, the next highest to Forge.
“All of the entrants are providing examples of premier works that they’re undertaking within each of their genres,” said HAVAN CEO Ron Rapp. “Whether that’s custom homes, production homes, renovations, bathrooms, kitchens—the whole spectrum.”
Local builders are at the forefront of industry trends, Rapp says—especially when it comes to addressing climate concerns. Categories in this area include Best Environmental Initiative, Excellence in Building Products and Technology, and the BC Housing Award for Excellence in Innovative Housing.
“It’s not so much a function of fashion as it is a matter of responding to the desires and needs of their customers. Adding to that the heightened concern with respect to addressing climate issues, many members are putting forward entries that reflect high-performance construction, where the operating and energy performance of the home is significantly higher than you would find in a basic B.C.-code house.”
Winners of the HAVAN Awards Gala will be announced on Saturday, April 30 at the JW Marriott Parq Hotel.
