Yesterday Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney visited the Governor General, asking for the dissolution of Parliament, just nine days after he was sworn in as Canada’s new PM, following his successful campaign to replace Justin Trudeau as Liberal Leader. The 2025 Federal Election by the numbers…a Primer The “writ has been dropped” and Canadians will be going to their local polls on Monday, April 28th in the 45th federal election in our country’s history. And while we commonly think of the big five political parties: …there are actually 17 Electoral Parties including the Peoples Party of Canada which has made a comeback, the Libertarian Party, the Rhinoceros Party, the Communist Party and the Animal Protection Party, which are all running candidates in Metro Vancouver. As our country has grown, so has the number of electoral ridings and Members of Parliament to be elected. In the first Canadian election in 1867, 181 MPs were elected while in 2025 we will be electing 343 MPs. There are five new ridings across the country, including one in the Okanagan here in BC. With a total of 43 electoral districts in British Columbia, Metro Vancouver holds over half of them with 24 in the lower mainland.
